Inspired by Lindy Woodhead’s novel Shopping, Seduction & Mr. Selfridge, ITV’s addictive period drama is rich in romantic triangles, hunger and striving. After a successful career at Marshall Field, Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven, Ellen, Entourage) decides to open his own department store in London. All begins on a rainy day that hardly befits his hearty and somewhat effusive temperament. Mr. Selfridge drops into the Gamages emporium and asks to see an array of gloves. The store clerk, young Agnes Towler (Aisling Loftus, Dive, Thorne: Sleepyhead), understands his request, but refuses to fulfill it because customers are supposed to know what they want without picking over the goods. However, she gets her walking ticket for giving Harry a closer look. Trying to comfort her for the time being, he generously buys Agnes a pair of red leather gloves. The grand and imposing multi-storied Selfridge store hasn’t been built yet, but its Oxford Street site has been very well-chosen and financial backing assured. As luck would have it, Harry’s business partner suddenly backs out. Batting on a sticky wicket, he cuts a clandestine deal with the very well-connected Lady Mae Loxley (Katherine Kelly, Coronation Street, The Field of Blood).

Always ready to humor Harry are his dutiful but eternally discontent wife, Rose (Frances O’Connor, Cashmere Mafia, Vegas), and a sexy, singing showgirl, named Ellen Love (Zoe Tapper, Survivors, The Musketeers). Among the gentlemen who get themselves noticed as the series progresses rank Henri Leclair (Gregory Fitoussi, Spiral, Les hommes de l’ombre), the dashing “best window display man in the world”, who is fond of Agnes Towler’s helpful suggestions while striving in, Victor Colleano (Trystan Gravelle, Anonymous), one of the store restaurant’s waiters, who is intent on courting the young store clerk and someday opening his own eating house, and Roderick “Roddy” Temple (Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Dracula), an aspiring young painter, who losese his heart to Rose after a chance meeting at an art museum.

Nestle into a pile of pillows on the couch and enjoy the drama… enjoy the fashion!
